M1-2: Open Source vs SaaS / Hosted
Open Source vs SaaS / Hosted
To setup an online business, you will want to look for a complete e-commerce solution that allows you to set up an online store to sell your goods and be able to organize your products, customize your storefront, accept credit card payments, track and respond to orders and connect other sales channels to grow your business.
There are two choices… an open source platform or SaaS (software as a service) or sometimes called hosted platform.
Open source e-commerce platforms are typically free to download and use, but you will need to setup and maintain the hardware and software which requires technical skills and time not to mention a web developer to create your online store. As you can imagine, the costs will go from free to expensive very quickly.
SaaS e-commerce platforms will, for a monthly subscription fee, provide you with a with a fully functional ecommerce platform that tends to be less technically complex. This will allow you to manage the store yourself without worrying about software, hardware and you will undoubtedly save money. Not to mention it will require less integrations between systems so your online store will have more uptime and be available to make more sales.
Which one would I recommend? Hands-down I would pick a SaaS / Hosted solution. Let the experts handle what they do best so that you can build and grow your business!
